Project Description

Line

The important role that lines play in the world of design is clear – they form the foundation for some of the other design elements and principles. Used by interior designers to define the forms and shapes within an area, lines act as a visual guide to an interior space.

Broadly categorized as being horizontal, vertical or dynamic, lines help influence the type of interactions occurring within a space. Horizontal lines found in structures such as tables, chairs and beds help create a safe, secure feeling. A free and expansive sensation is found in vertical lines, such as those found in windows and doorways. Dynamic or angular lines, evident on structures like stairs, are action-oriented and add a sense of drama.

Quick Reference

Use of lines helps to create the feeling within a living space. Depending on mood desired, a certain form of line will work best:

  • Vertical Lines create a sense of formality, stability and dignity; best used for elevator areas, security spaces and hallways
  • Horizontal Lines bring calmness, peacefulness and relaxation to a space; great for spas and hallways
  • Diagonal or Zig Zag Lines create feelings of action and excitement; suitable for gyms or party rooms
  • Curved Lines convey a mood of grace, comfort and movement; found in floor demarcations, furnishings, countertops, desks and walls
